Stories of Impact: Dallas Summer Musicals

Putting theA” in STEAM Education

The partnership between The Addy Foundation and Dallas Summer Musicals is addressing two “A”s in education:  The Arts and Accessibility. With the majority of resources focused on the South Dallas/Fair Park neighborhood with additional outreach throughout the District, our work together centers on three core initiatives:

  1. Hamilton Live at the Music Hall and in Classrooms throughout the City – An entire performance of Hamilton is being dedicated to Dallas ISD students from 26 high schools who will converge at the Music Hall to see the show after participating in nine sessions of STEM-based classroom curriculum infused with the arts. The bespoke HAMILTON-themed curriculum focuses on marketing theory and technology with Adobe Pro and Photoshop software installed in classrooms as students create their own marketing plan for this blockbuster hit.  As one of the most popular and influential musicals of the century, Hamilton provides an experience like no other by telling the story of our nation’s founding through contemporary story-telling styles and groundbreaking casting that puts black and brown actors front and center. One of the largest issues in the arts sector is the inability of black and brown children to see themselves onstage. Dallas ISD students, many for the first time, will have the opportunity to not only see individuals who look and sound like them perform, but also learn American history in a relatable and approachable way.

  1. Professional Development Workshops for Dallas ISD Educators to enhance their own cultural intelligence and infuse what they learn into lesson plans for the benefit of their students. These sessions will explore innovative teaching approaches and techniques designed to increase student engagement and success, as well as provide a more equitable classroom experience.
  1. Understanding that the skills learned through participating in arts-based programs are transferrable to a variety of other disciplines, DSM will provide Dallas ISD theater and dance students with Master Classes designed to increase a students’ level of knowledge in a specific area, such as how body language can tell a story, and how in-depth research can bring a narrative to life.
Dallas ISD students and teachers enjoy a dedicated performance.

For more than 80 years, Dallas Summer Musicals has ensured that North Texas audiences are presented with the very best touring Broadway musicals and plays in its home venue, the historic Music Hall at Fair Park, and through a recent collaboration with the AT&T Performing Arts Center, now also at the Winspear Opera House.  Beyond presenting Broadway shows, Dallas Summer Musicals’ mission is to provide access to “the spirit of Broadway” to as many members of our community as possible.

Children are our future. Their ability to question, to think outside of the box, to be curious, to socially engage and act within arts-based institutions and within the communities they live are all by-products of exposure to the arts. The Addy Foundation and Dallas Summer Musicals are proud to be partnering to expand the horizons of our youth and engage them in the celebration of life’s creativity.
