The Covid-19 pandemic wiped out academic gains for many students and widened racial and economic gaps. While pandemic learning loss occurred across all students, income levels, and subject areas, the steepest decline occurred for low-income African American and Hispanic students, particularly in math. Beacon Hill believes that talent is distributed equally but opportunity is not.
Together, The Addy Foundation and Beacon Hill are changing the odds for DFW students by providing reading and math tutoring (which can double or even triple what students learn) in the schools and neighborhoods where they’re needed most.

Beacon Hill’s Approach
Using small-group tutoring (3:1 student : tutor ratios) and the award-winning Gideon curriculum, Beacon Hill brings a deep understanding of the students and neighborhoods it serves, combined with proven, data-driven approaches for driving academic growth. In 2023, they will tutor more than 1600 students (most in both reading and math) via in-school, after-school, and summer programs at 25 schools and community locations throughout the Metroplex.
Beacon Hill’s goal is to get all students to grade-level proficiency. 90% of students who attend at least 48 tutoring sessions (out of 60) will significantly progress towards this goal. Since 2006 we have served more than 11,000 students, parents and families across 13 local school districts and communities. In 2021-22 we tutored 974 students (64% African American, 27% Hispanic, 95% low-income). Our leaders are from the communities they serve, and we are proud to have received the 2021 Excellence in Program Delivery Award from Literacy Texas.
Our Approach:
- Builds confidence through mastery. Children can start learning to read and do basic math as young as age four.
- Removes the school struggle by reducing homework stress, solidifying the foundation, and filling in any holes and gaps
- Sets a comfortable pace allowing each child to progress through the step-by-step curriculum at his or her own speed
- Determines a just right starting point in our curriculum and is not based on age or grade. Extra practice or repetition is only given if needed
